Here at Terrace Smiles Dentistry we are concerned about the health of your teeth and gums. Do you have gums that bleed when you brush and floss? Are your gums red and puffy? Do you have bad breath? These are all signs of gum disease and because your gums are the foundation of the health of your mouth, it’s important that the gum disease is treated so you can keep your teeth for life.
We offer Laser Periodontal Therapy (LPT). This is a no cut, no sew way to treat gum disease that is faster to do and faster to heal from.
What is Periodontal or gum disease?
It is an infection of the supporting gum tissues and bone that support your teeth, keeping them in place. This condition can affect anyone, but more so adults in their 30s and 40s. Gum disease is caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, chronic illnesses such as diabetes, some medications and genetics.
What is Laser Periodontal Therapy?
We us a dental laser to access and remove the inflamed gum tissue from around the root of each tooth. Once the infected tissue is removed, the root is exposed. At this point, root scaling begins. This involves scraping off the plaque built up below the gemlike and around the root. We then smooth out the root to remove any rough spots. Now the area between the gum and the root can begin to regenerate during the healing process.
What are the benefits?
- No cutting or suturing.
- Less discomfort than with traditional surgery.
- Less time – It takes two 2 hour visits and two follow up visits.
- Able to quickly return to normal routine.
- LPT gives longer lasting results.
