A root canal is needed when the nerve of a tooth, also known as pulp, is infected because of decay or trauma. In this case, the infection may spread and become abscessed. An abscess will have symptoms of a dull throb to intense pain. A root canal treatment must be done to save the tooth from being pulled and to prevent the abscess from traveling through the bloodstream to other parts of the body.
Simply put, during a root canal procedure, the pulp is removed along with the nerve. Then the tooth is filled and usually a dental crown is placed to strengthen and protect the treated tooth. Root canal therapy is a relatively painless procedure that will significantly diminish the pain and discomfort of the infected tooth.
If you are experiencing any of the pain mentioned above, or you have an injured tooth that has darkened, give us a call at (813) 977-7000 to set up an appointment. We’re here to help!
